Since 1991 the Calcutta Project has worked together with its partner organisation in Calcutta (India) to develop programmes to improve the health of disadvantaged people.
With their voluntary commitment, students at the University of Basel put what they have learned in their studies into practice. On top of that, they develop important skills for their future professional lives – from leading fundraising meetings to project evaluation. The students, the partner organisation and the people in Calcutta profit from the technical support of the University and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. At the same time, the students broaden their horizons through the international exchange with India.

Project updates from PHPA

PHPA’s important project, the distribution of health cards to CSW’s, has made efforts. The number of health cards distributed has risen to 90. Given the fact, that only 50 Health Cards could be distributed in the first year, this increase within a few months is a great success. One reason may be, that the holders of health cards receive 50 condoms for each visit, which is higher than the condoms given to non-health card holders. The immediate aim is to reach a total number of 150 distributed health cards by October.

News from PHPA: Public Health for Prostitute Areas
April 11, 2011
The development of the new Health Cards for Commercial Sex Workers is the most important project of PHPA at that time. After their introduction in spring 2010, the distribution has temporarily been interrupted inspring 2011. Resason is that only few Health Cards have been distributed and an ongoing low CSW's acceptance of Health Cards. The stopp of distribution has already lead to an increasing interest in Health Cards wich is very positive. It is now our intention to develop new ideas to get the distribution working better and to raise the interest of the CSW.

Highlight Rhakis Day
October 29, 2010
Once again the day has come- the 23rd of August is Rhakis Day in India. The children from the Konika Kindergarten had already started preparing for this celebration weeks ago. They invented dance performances, practiced songs and made a colourful decoration. Furthermore, children who attended the Kindergarten most frequently during the last year get a little present. CP always tries to motivate the children of sex workers to spend their afternoons at the Konika Kindergarten instead of on the street. With succeed – at the moment Konika Kindergarten counts 45 enthusiastic children!
HCPSC: Prevention is better than cure!
August 23, 2010
The HCPSC programme is implementing health check ups for around of 10,000 school children in around 150 schools yearly. Our on site doctor team has checked up in the month of August 1,200 of school children in 25 schools. Primary and upper school children are tested for diseases like worm infestation, anaemia and underweight. Children with more serious diseases are sent to and treated in the outpatient clinic of the CP. With the motto of “Prevention is better than cure”, different prevention counselling were hold concerning e.g. HIV/ AIDS, hygiene, dental hygiene and malnutrition. Our program monitors are planning to introduce next year a first aid course in addition to the existing counselling topics. The HCSPC program is extremely demanded by teachers and students likewise. It is meeting a highly positive approval by the school children and the parents.
News from the Mother Child Health Program MCH
October 7, 2010
A highlight for the Mother Child Health Program MCH was the Mother Day which was celebrated on 9th of May. This year, a counselling session for teenagers was organised amongst others. They discussed questions such as: „What is the meaning of mother in your life?” or “What role does your mother play in your life?” In summer, our partner organisation had to cope with very bad weather conditions: the temperature and humidity was higher than it ever was in the last 30 years. In the afternoons, the streets were almost vacant. The outdoor activities of SBDCH were continued as usual, but less women made their way to the clinic and the counselling sessions. Also in the following month, MCH will have to work hard to keep patient numbers high because of the many Indian festivals coming. In August, MCH organised a course on breast feeding that attracted pregnant women, new mothers and other interested people. MCH is also using every opportunity to inform about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to the achievement of which MCH also makes a small but important contribution.
Konika Night Shelter
June 25, 2010
The Night Shelter is the CPs newest program. It was set up on the 5th of August 2009 as an extended program of the Konika Kindergarten, where the children whose mothers prostitute themselves (CWs) are always welcome to spend their afternoons. At the Night Shelter these children have the possibility to also stay there overnight and profit from an even more extensive care. After their school day they have space to play, sing and dance. Furthermore, the children get support while doing their homework. The children to whom the Night Shelter is not familiar yet are quite shy at the start, but they quickly develop real friendships with equally affected children.
MCH: Millenium Development Goals
Mai 15, 2010
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight international development goals that all 192 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations have agreed to achieve by the year 2015. They include reducing extreme poverty, reducing child and maternal mortality ratio (MDG 4 and 5). MCH is focusing on maternal and childhealth by providing medical care in gynaecology , obstetrics and paediatrics. We are also organizing counselling and awarness camps to emphasis the important role of women in the Indian society (MDG3). And amongst other programmes we are arranging puls polio days to immunise the children. The MCH is contributing this way to reach the goals in India.
PHPA aims high for the coming Indian year
March 27, 2010
Amongst others, the PHPA's doctors team intends to reach 100 participants at every group session as well as 250 commercial sex workers per month in individual counsellings, and to teach them about hygienic, dietary and sexual health topics. The planed introduction of personal health cards for every CSW should increase the efficiency and success of medical consultations. The statistical evaluation of last year's activities have shown that less CSW make use of medical treatments by the PHPA. Therefore the number of participants at preventive and social activities (group and individual discussions, counsellings et al.) is considerably increasing. The Calcutta Project wants to support this favourable progression also for the coming year.
Thank you!
January 17, 2010
A new year is starting and we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your support. Together with our partner organization SB Devi Charity Home in Kolkata we are looking forward to a new moving year.
