mission

The Foundation Calcutta Project Basel pursues the following missions through its activities:

Improvement of medical basic care

We regard health as a human right. An overall high-quality medical basic care is not guaranteed in India. Access to medical facilities and institutions depends too often on the economical situation of the local population. This is why we consider it an important task to improve medical basic care where public institutions are inadequate. At the same time everybody should have access to high-quality medical basic care not depending on his or her financial situation.

Prevention

Many health problems are caused by inappropriate behaviour. Prevention tries to avoid such problems through preventive activities. In India there is a lack of educational institutions transmitting preventive knowledge. Thus, we consider it important to encourage preventive work in order to avoid future health problems. For us, focused educational work in the health sector is an essential part of a sustainable future-oriented development.

Training

International development cooperation is an interesting vocational field for university graduates. However, it is difficult to gain insights into this topic during study years. We want to offer young interested people the possibility for a practice-oriented experience with international development cooperation. The Foundation Calcutta Project Basel should therefore be run by the students themselves, with technical input from the Foundation Board. We promote project oriented learning, interdisciplinary exchange and critical discussion of our activities. After all, we want to connect education and commitment.

Student exchange from Switzerland to India and doctor exchange from India to Switzerland

There are big differences between the medical systems in India and in Switzerland. On both sides, there are positive and also negative states and trends. Thus we want to promote exchanges between medical staff of those two countries. We are convinced that there is a lot to learn from each other and that intercultural exchange and mutual understanding represent enrichment on all levels.

Conduction of scientific studies consistent with the goals of the Foundation

Research in international development cooperation for us is very important to promote sustainable development for all humanity. Thus we want to create a platform for interdisciplinary research in this sector. We try to join questions from different departments and connect actors from science and practice in a network.
